Change-makers are entrepreneurial people that actively make a difference in the world and influence other people with their experiments.Where as change-makers in the past generations tried to change society as a whole by protesting on the streets or against the government, people from this generation start by changing their own lifestyle en their local environment and grow bigger and bigger.
Usually the change process start with a personal problem of difficulty a person encounters. This problem needs to be solved and the person is searching for a solution. One the solution is found a person decides that there are other people who probably have the same problem, they create a vision about how this problem should be solved, this can be by starting a movement, a charity but also by starting a business. A good example tends to be followed and other people start to adopt the vision. If the problem raised by the change-maker is an underlying problem within the society he becomes a role model. The change-maker becomes the personification of an unified problem and usually has to explain other groups why these changes need to be made.
This said, I found 16 common characteristics in my interviews with several change-makers.
1. Self-knowledge and confidence: Ancient greeks already said, ' know thyself, if men woud search diligently in their own minds and examine minutely their thought an action they would be more censuring the conduct of others.' According to the change-makers you have to know yourself and your goal so you can work towards it. Change doesn't come from following others, you have to trust yourself and your ideas before others can trust you.
2. Strength instead of power: Respect needs to be earned by the actions you have taken. The title CEO or CFO doesn't necessarily claim that you are a good leader. You have to be consistent in word and action and have to prove your relevance in the world.
3. Facilitator: Change-makers see themselves often as facilitators. They don't give straight ideas and answers but help people to create their own ideas and answers. They serve others without losing respect. Because they want to get the best out of people.
4. Asynchronous reciprocity: Making connections is an important characteristic for a Change-maker. Connections within their own network but also connecting different ideas and people. Seeing these connections and to anticipate accordingly helps to respond to continuous change and create a more powerful outcome. By helping others you create a bond and they trust that by doing good things you will be rewarded eventually. Not necessarily by the persoon themselves but through the network.
5. Courage and dare to dream: To make real change you need guts otherwise nothing happens. Change-makers dare to be vulnerable and ask for help when they can't do it on their own. They take responsibility for their own action and show who they are without being arrogant. They dare to make mistakes and fix them if necessary. They ale have a dream, some are clear and others are vague but they dare to share their dreams and react on them.
6. Curiosity: Change-makers are curious, they want to know how the world works and explore it. This is an important characteristic because if you never wonder why something works the way it does it can never be improved.
7. Creativity and quick-witted: Creativity in the broadest sense of the word. It is both finding creative solutions to problems but also in the form of art and culture. Change-makers often seek people like themselves which are open to new ideas, quickly understand what they mean and know how to change these ideas into concrete actions.
8. Good people skills: Change-makers often have good people skills, they fit into different networks but manage to stay themselves. This makes them fascinating but also incomprehensible because you can't put them in a box.
9. Paradigm shifters: The things change-makers do are often means to achieve their goal. This goals is to change the mindset of other people. by changing peoples view of the world they change their reality.
10. Flexibel & open-minded: They don't fight change but embrace it. they are open to suggestions and feedback on their own ideas and are not afraid that someone will steal their idea. Because they believe in it's purpose weather they achieve it or someone else. By combining your knowledge and resources together you can make the idea even better.
11. Passionately: Change-makers work with passion and pleasure. They work diligently and tell about it with a sparkle in their eyes, this makes that they can convey this enthusiasm and touch and inspire other people.
12. Stubborn: Change-makers have often a unique view on things. They have a healthy dose of mistrust of the existing processes. Therefore they are often rioters in people's eyes.
13. Modest: Most change-makers do not see themselves as change-makers but as people who just do their thing.
